About Us

Sikh National College, one of the oldest and historical educational institutions of the region, was established in June 1938 at Lahore, with S. Niranjan Singh as its founder principal. It was the first college in the whole country, whose building fluttered the Tricolour (Tringa) as a symbol of National character. It was the dream of the people of the time to build an idealistic institute committed to National ideals that would mould the character of students into non-communal brotherhood. For the purpose, Principal Niranjan Singh had the backing as well as co-operation of Baba Bhola Singh, Master Kehar Singh, Giani Kartar Singh, Master Tara Singh and Bawa Harkishan Singh Ji. Sikh Educational Society (S. E. S.) was registered in Lahore with Baba Bhola Singh as President and Master Kehar Singh as the Secretary to manage the college affairs.

Sardar Bahadur Inder Singh Ji, in Jan. 1938, laid the foundation stone of the college. He donated one Lac rupees to the college and was elected as President of the S. E. S. The major cash fundings to the college came from various Gurdwara Committees of Sikh shrines namely, Darbar Sahib Amritsar, Nankana Sahib, Punja Sahib and Taran Taran Sahib. The college building was constructed in a record time of three months. A local Managing Committee was formed and S. Baldev Singh (The First Defense Minister of Independent India) and S. Sampuran Singh were elected as the President and the Vice-President respectively.

As the country edged towards the partition, the functioning of the college was abandoned at Lahore in June 1947 and it was shifted at Qadian, in March 1948, with staff- Prof. Pritam Singh, S. Niranjan Singh, Sh. Des Raj, Sh. Baken Lal (Lib.), S. Balbir Singh (Clerk), Tara Singh (Lab Attendant), S. Karam Singh and Sh. Amarnath. It was a big challenge for these people to reestablish the college, but they bravely faced and overcome the difficulties of the way. Principal Niranjan Singh appointed Major Kartar Singh as the acting principal of the college and Later on, Bawa Harkishan Singh ji was made the first Principal of the college in post-Independent era.

Sikh National College is proud to be the institute, which has produced students of national and international fame. Apart from producing distinguished politicians like, Chief Minister of Punjab, S. Parkash Singh Badal, Cabinet Ministers, MP's and MLA's, the college has generated many top brasses in Armed forces, police and has also produced renowned Academicians, Doctors, Engineers, Poets, Scholars and Public Servants.

Presently, The Sikh Educational Society (S E S), sector 26, Chandigarh manages the college affairs, along with seven other pioneer educational institutions, SGGS College Chandigarh, GGS College Chandigarh for Women, SGGS College of Pharmacy Chandigarh, SGGS Collegiate Public School Cahndigarh and Sikh National College, Banga. Hon'ble S. Gurdev Singh Brar & Colonel J.S. Bala ji (Retd.) are respectively the President and Secretary of the Society. It is a great honour for all of us that eminent Sikh educationists and leaders, like S. Kapoor Singh, Ajit Singh Sarhadi, S. Gurcharan Singh Tohra have remained worthy president of S E S. Principal Bharpur Singh, being Secretary of S E S, has also contributed a lot to build and establish the institutes committed to serve society. Now, to look after the college affairs, a local managing committee (L M C) has been formed with Hakeem Sawaran Singh as the Secretary. It is a matter of proud for us that U G C has accredited the college with B+ grade. With this, the college is now one of the leading institutes in quality and excellence around the region.
